Software Engineer (Mobile - Android)
Take ownership of the Queri Android app, our flagship product, and lead native mobile development from architecture to release.
About Queri
Queri is a startup building the next generation of fan engagement infrastructure.
Through personalized videos, chat, global fan clubs, and community features, we help creators and fans connect on a deeper level.
We support a wide range of talent, indie idols, pro wrestlers, musicians, comedians, cosplayers, and influencers, helping them deepen fan relationships, monetize, and expand their reach in Japan and internationally.
Queri is already live and generating revenue. From here, we are expanding from one-to-one fan communication into subscription fan clubs, scalable community experiences, and AI-powered products for creators, fans, and entertainment businesses.
We are looking for an experienced Android engineer to take ownership of our flagship app and help shape the future of fan engagement, creator technology, and AI-powered consumer products.
Fan Engagement
Engaging global fans directly through fanclubs, merch, tickets, and community.
B2B Intelligence
Showing where global demand exists for entertainment IP.
Activation
Converting demand into sponsorships, campaigns, events, and market expansion.
The Role
As Tech Lead / Android Developer, you will take over the Android version of the Queri app, our flagship product, owning the native codebase end to end: architecture, implementation, releases, and quality.
You will work directly with the CTO and closely with the CEO, designers, and the rest of the team to plan features, ship them to production, and keep the app fast, stable, and loved by fans and creators.
We are a small team that ships quickly, and AI-assisted development is how we work. Claude Code and Claude Design are used daily across the company, and you will be expected to use them as force multipliers.
That said, we are not looking for vibe coders. You should have deep experience shipping native Android apps without AI assistance, and you are expected to understand every line of code that ships, whether you wrote it by hand or generated it with AI.
This is a hands-on leadership role: you will set the technical direction for mobile, lead development as the team grows, and be the person responsible for everything that reaches the Play Store.
Please note this is a Tokyo-based hybrid position, not a fully remote role. You must currently hold a valid working visa for Japan (or otherwise have the right to work in Japan). We will sponsor your visa renewals, but we are not able to sponsor an initial visa or relocation for this role.
Key Responsibilities
Own the Queri Android app end to end: architecture, implementation, testing, releases, and Play Store operations.
Lead the technical direction for mobile, making pragmatic decisions on architecture, libraries, and tooling.
Plan, build, and ship new features on a regular cadence with the CEO, CTO, designers, and backend engineers.
Keep the app fast, stable, and reliable, monitoring crashes and performance with Firebase and analytics tooling.
Use analytics and product metrics to understand user behavior and inform what to build next.
Build and maintain the app's integrations with our APIs, push notifications, payments, and media pipelines.
Use Claude Code and Claude Design daily to accelerate development, prototyping, and UI work.
Review code, set engineering standards, and raise the bar for mobile quality across the company.
Coordinate releases end to end: versioning, staged rollouts, store listings, and release notes.
Help shape the roadmap for the iOS app alongside Android as our mobile footprint grows.
What Success Looks Like
Within your first year, you will:
- Fully take over the Android app and own it from architecture to releases.
- Ship meaningful features and improvements to fans and creators on a regular cadence.
- Measurably improve stability, performance, and app store ratings.
- Establish clear mobile engineering practices: CI, release process, monitoring, and quality gates.
- Grow into the technical leader for everything mobile at Queri.
Requirements
- A valid working visa for Japan (or the right to work in Japan) held at the time of application, we sponsor renewals, not initial visas. This is a Tokyo-based hybrid role, not a fully remote position.
- 5+ years of professional native Android development experience.
- A track record of shipping and operating production Android apps on the Play Store.
- Experience shipping Android apps without AI assistance. You are expected to understand every line of code that ships, hand-written or AI-generated.
- Strong Kotlin skills and deep familiarity with the modern Android stack.
- Comfortable using analytics and Firebase (Crashlytics, Analytics, or similar) to monitor and improve a live app.
- Daily working proficiency with Claude Code and Claude Design. AI-assisted development is our standard.
- A self-starter who can own a product area with minimal direction.
- Professional working English. Japanese is not required.
- Comfortable in a small, fast-moving startup environment.
Nice to Have
- Web or React Native experience.
- Experience being in charge of an iOS app, as owner or lead.
- Experience in entertainment, creator economy, or fan community products.
- Experience with payments, subscriptions, or in-app purchases.
- Experience with mobile CI/CD (GitHub Actions, Fastlane, or similar).
- Experience working with international teams and global consumer products.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal Tech Lead / Android Developer is not just a strong implementer, they are an owner. They treat the app as their product: they notice the crash rate moving before anyone reports it, they care about startup time and jank, and they take pride in what fans and creators actually hold in their hands.
They move fast without breaking trust, use AI tools like Claude Code and Claude Design as force multipliers, communicate clearly in a bilingual company, and are excited to take a flagship product and make it their own.

We don't count vacation days against a quota. Agree on it with your manager and actually take your breaks.
Reporting Structure
This position reports to the CTO and works closely with the CEO, design, and the engineering team.
